Light From Above

BBMaui, Cappadocia, Turkey. These ruins are some of the earliest churches anywhere in the world. Asia Minor has many churches and dwellings from the times when the Christians were hiding from the Romans. These beautiful stone arches and walls are all self supporting. There is no concrete, iron or wood. Only the weight and the placement of the stones support the structure. Many of these building techniques were invented in this part of the world. The entire roof of this room is a collection of self supporting arches, and every room in the building has an independent self supporting roof.

It is amazing that these "primitive" buildings have survived for 2000 years at an earthquake zone.
