Cartmel Priory Church - interior
The beautiful Priory Church at Cartmel in the Furness area of Cumbria is considered to be the finest church in the north-west of England. The Grade I-listed medieval building was largely complete by 1250. Its massive east window was installed in the 1400s and replaced smaller windows. The Priory Church survived the Reformation in the 1530s, when so many abbeys were destroyed, because local people claimed it was their only available place of worship. But apart from the separate gateway, all its other buildings were demolished.
