Old village school, Orlingbury, Northamptonshire

This beautiful former village school overlooks the green in Orlingbury, our neighbouring village in Northamptonshire. Out of shot to the left is the village church, which dates from 1843 and is Grade II*-listed. It is thought the same architect, R C Hussey, was responsible for this Grade II-listed former school, which is now a private residence.

The former school room is this end of the building, and all age groups would have been mixed in together. The schoolmaster would have occupied the adjacent house. My mother went to a similar village school in Surrey just before the First World War. The older children helped to teach the younger ones. They were all taught to read and write properly, to spell and do simple arithmetic. They were made to learn their times tables. Needless to say, there was strict discipline.
