Polperro and its harbour entrance, Cornwall

If there was a competition for the prettiest fishing village in Cornwall I imagine Polperro would be there, or thereabouts. It is chocolate box pretty and as a result attracts huge crowds of holiday visitors. Fortunately, it was out-of-season when I visited, and I was also lucky with the weather.

Like other places along the coast of Cornwall, Polperro had a reputation for smuggling back in the 18th and 19th centuries, and there is an old coastguard lookout (now a private residence) right inside the harbour. It still retains a small fishing industry with a number of day boats that go out and return later that day. But its main income as with so many places in Cornwall is from the tourist industry. The village has a number of pubs, restaurants and cafes, not to mention art galleries (which have had quite a bit of my money over the years).
