The village of Lydford, Dartmoor

Sometimes places have the most unexpected history. The ancient village of Lydford, within the Dartmoor National Park in West Devon, was founded by King Alfred as one of four Anglo Saxon burghs in Devon. At the time of Edward the Confessor it was second in size only to Exeter. There are the remains of a castle next to the delightful 16th century Castle Inn (pictured), while the nearby Church of St Petroc was built on the site of an early Christian wooden church from around 650AD. That is thought to have been destroyed in a Viking raid in 997AD. Lydford has a medieval bridge over the River Lyd, which flows through the deep and narrow Lydford Gorge, just to the west of the village.
