Old pathway, Dewerstone Wood, Dartmoor

This old stone roadway almost certainly dates back to the 19th century or earlier, when this south-western corner of Dartmoor near Shaugh Prior was a hive of industrial activity. There was a mineral railway with tunnels and mines, quarries and china clay workings. Remains of the old buildings are still visible, and the entrance to an old tin or copper mine is only about 20 yards away. The area is known as the Goodameavy Estate and is owned by the National Trust. A short distance from here the River Plym is joined by the River Meavy before flowing south towards the sea at Plymouth.
