Mevagissey harbour, Cornwall (Explored)
After a month away in the south-west I've now got literally hundreds of photos to go through and select the best.
Mevagissey is one of my favourite fishing villages in Cornwall. Its twin working harbours with a few dozen small fishing boats sit between steep hillsides in the south of Cornwall. It has a tradition of boat building dating back to 1745. Many of the old buildings, constructed of cob and slate, bear testimony to a time when the large shoals of pilchards were the livelihood of the whole village. Smuggling also provided a living for many.
The inner harbour (pictured) is built on the site of a medieval quay. The first Act of Parliament allowing the new port to be built was passed in 1774, and the harbour dates from this time. The outer harbour was added in 1888.
Mevagissey had a power station built in 1895, powered by pilchard oil, which provided electricity for the small lighthouse at the end of the harbour plus surrounding streets. Local sources claim that it was the first town in the country to have electric street lighting.
