The village of Axmouth, East Devon

This delightful little east Devon village isn't actually at the mouth of the River Axe at all. The river has silted up and the mouth is well over half a mile away on the eastern edge of Seaton, which is across the other side of the river. Here the original bridge, which is now pedestrian only, dates from 1877 and was the first in England to be made of concrete. There is now a more modern road bridge alongside. The estuary is renowned for its bird life, and on the other side of the river the Seaton Tramway runs a service to Colyton using old trams that were formerly used at seaside towns around England. This is open mainly outside the winter months. There are the remains of a hill fort on Hawkesdown Hill, seen on the left behind the thatched houses. The village has a Grade I-listed church dating back to the Norman era. This has a 15th century tower just out of shot to the right. There is a also choice of two delightful village pubs where I have enjoyed many a pint over the years.
