St Mary's Church, Lower Slaughter, The Cotswolds

This Grade II*-listed church has a 12th and 13th century Norman heritage, but was substantially rebuilt and remodelled in 1867 by Benjamin Ferrey for Charles Shapland Whitmore. So many English churches had fallen into disrepair by the 19th century, that the latter half of the 1800s - when England was perhaps the richest nation in the world - turned into a major period for church restoration and refurbishment.
