Welsh Highland Railway, Caernarfon

Another shot of the engine just leaving Caernarfon Station and hauling a passenger train on the narrow gauge railway between Caernarfon and Porthmadog. This is loco 87, a NGG16 2-6-2+2-6-2T Garratt, which was imported from South Africa where it operated on a narrow gauge line (2 ft - 610mm) in Natal. It was one of four actually manufactured by the John Cockerill Company in Belgium in 1937.

The Welsh Highland Railway or Rheilffordd Eryri was completed in 1922. The original railway was not a success and closed in 1937. Starting in 1997 the railway was progressively reopened and is now a successful tourist attraction. The Ffestiniog Railway Company is the owner and operator of both the Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland Railway.
