Ancient quay at Falmouth, Cornwall
This must have been Falmouth's original harbour when the town was first built in the early 1600s. The Chain Locker (pictured) on the side of the harbour is the one of the best-known waterfront sights in Cornwall. The pub attracts sailors and tourists in equal measure and manages to retain a unique maritime atmosphere. This Grade II-listed building is said to date from 1660, when it was known as the Marine Hotel. There are later additions to the premises.
Prior to the town of Falmouth being built the main town was at Penryn, a mile or so upriver. The Falmouth Packet Service operated out of Falmouth for over 160 years between 1689 and 1851. Its purpose was to carry mail to and from Britain's growing empire. As the most south-westerly deep harbour in Great Britain Falmouth was often the first port for returning Royal Navy ships.
