Low tide at Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk

Despite its name, Wells-next-the-Sea is situated a good mile or so from open water. Like many places along this stretch of the North Norfolk coast, silting has resulted in limited access to the sea, with salt marshes lying between the town's harbour and the open sea. There is one main waterway and two other narrow creeks providing access at high tide. These provide sheltered moorings for a number of yachts and other pleasure craft. Back in Tudor times, Wells was one of the great ports of eastern England.
