Durdle Door, Jurassic Coast, Dorset (Explored)

As I headed towards Devon for a few days' break at Sidmouth I thought I would take the pretty way, and drive along the Dorset coast first, taking in several of the interesting features that are to be found along this part of the southern English coastline. Durdle Door is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset. There are few early written records about this famous arch, though it has kept a name given to it probably over a thousand years ago. In the distance can be seen the Isle of Portland.

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site that stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 96 miles. It consists of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous cliffs, spanning the Mesozoic Era, and documenting 180 million years of geological history.
