Perranporth, Cornwall

I first came to Perranporth on the north Cornish coast over fifty years ago, and in those days the sea stacks in the foreground were all part of the cliffs and could be walked on safely. Now they have been separated by erosion, while the cliffs themselves are fast disappearing into the sea. Judging by two separate bunches of flowers tied to the fence there may well have been fatalities here. The large sandy beach is a favourite with both families and surfers, and during the summer the RNLI provides a lifeguard service. This has been featured on the TV series "Seaside rescue".

The town's name comes from Porth Peran, the Cornish for the cove of Saint Piran, the patron saint of Cornwall. He founded St Piran's Oratory on Penhale Sands - the dunes behind the beach - in the 7th century. Buried under sand for many centuries, it was unearthed in the 19th century.
