Around 1500 casemates have been built in the Netherlands. The Zuidfront in the Hoeksche Waard was also richly endowed with these group shelters. A casemate is not a combat bunker, but a hiding place for 12 men, about 75 meters behind the place where people would expect the fighting. The fighting itself took place in field positions, trenches, etc. 'The chimney' on top was used for a periscope, to be able to look outside.
