Centaur artillery OP tank with dummy gun
London's Imperial War Musuem maintains a huge country collection at Duxford near Cambridge. These are photos of a one-day visit and feature mainly the land warfare and Battle of Britain halls.
Pictured: A rare Centaur tank fitted with a dummy wooden gun barrel and used as an artillery observation post or OP tank. The dummy gun was intended to prevent drawing attention to this vehicle. A real gun could not be fitted as the turret interior was needed for extra radio equipment to allow artillery liaison.
The Centaur tank came before the Cromwell and was used for tank training. The only Centaurs ever used in combat were crewed by the Royal Marines and used for close fire support on and just after D-Day. All Royal Marine versions had the 95mm close support howitzer.
