Turf House at Glaumbær Farm
Last month, I posted a photo of the front facade of this extensive farm house; the rear, however, provides a better idea of the turf construction.
Glaumbær farm is on Skagafjörður in northern Iceland. A farm has stood on this site since the settlement of Iceland in ca 874 - give or take a few years.
The present farmhouse consists of 13 connected buildings. The "newest" addition to the turf house was built in 1876-1879; the oldest parts of the house date from the mid-1700s.
Folks lived in this house until 1947. Shortly afterwards, Glaumbær was declared as a conserved site and is now owned by the National Museum of Iceland.
