Hundreds of Years of History
Lanthorn Tower
Tower of London
London, England, U.K.
03-20-25
From the Wonders of the World site: "The Lanthorn tower was built between 1238 and 1272. It was commissioned by Henry III. It is one of the many towers that were built at that time, towers serving as defense to the white tower that was given a rampart. The Lanthorn Tower served as a royal apartment for the Queen, while the King was at the Wakefield Tower."
There are 23 "named" towers in the Tower of London. I caught this one as I exited the complex. The 21st century Shard Tower can be seen in the distance.
One thing that really impresses me as I tour the historical sites of England and other places I've visited around the world is that although modern technology creates some amazing wonders, they sometime break down and disappear, yet the wonders that have survived history all seem to have been built back in a time when there was mainly only manual labor and less "technological" means of building things.
