Sunset Skies at Manhattan Pier

Manhattan Beach, CA

12-05-22

At 3pm I was up in the Old Zoo at Griffith Park. I'd only arrived a short time earlier, and after a whole day photographing in Baldwin Hills and Los Angeles (battling weekday traffic, which takes a lot of time), driving up through Laurel Canyon, and into Griffith Park. I could have taken sunset shots in the Park, but my feet were tired, and my legs were achy.

Could I get down to the South Bay by sunset? Sure, but it was going to be close.

I took the 91 from the 110 and drove west. (The 91 ends and becomes Artesia Blvd when exiting the 110. ) I could physically see the sun dropping lower, against a nice cloudspray.

Hawthorne down to Pt. Vicente? Nah. Too long. I'd be a few miles from the destination when the sun set.

How about Manhattan Beach, straight shot to the 405, a short jog up to Manhattan Beach Blvd.

Monday night approaching sunset on a beautiful day. Sure to be lots of folks around the pier.

There were.

During Christmas (shopping) period, the Beach Cities put neat little red bags over the parking meters, and parking is free, so I just had to find one that wasn't metered at 15 minutes. A two hour spot appeared four blocks from the pier.

The sun was now touching the horizon. I walked as fast as I could, and got to where I wanted to be to get this shot, and some others, right as the sun disappeared, but the sky colors were still glorious.

I had to chuckle when I saw a post on Instagram proclaiming a sunset shot as the "trendy sunset photo of the day."

Well, here's mine.
