I was reminded of the quote from "The Wizard of Oz" because of the eye popping colors here and in the photo this looks like a farmhouse, albeit one with two stories. This wasn't a small farm house, but began life as a simple row house in a downtown L.A. tract in 1887.
The original owner, John J. Ford, was a wood carver who worked on the Iolani Palace in Hawaii and the California State Capital building, added his own one of a kind carvings to the house while being built.
