Like this one at Heringsdorf all passing loops on the single line from Bad Schwartau to Puttgarden were still operable due to the number of international passenger and freight trains, until the fixed link via the Great Belt opened in 1997 and freight trains were diverted to that route. In 2019 passenger trains were diverted as well leaving the line to domestic services until 2022, when the line was closed for reconstruction awaiting completion of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel.
