Backlit scales

This Painted Lady Butterfly (Vanessa cardui) wings are backlit by the sun. The male and female both called Painted Lady?! This one's on the garden's New England asters (Aster novae-angliae) at head high with more asters in the background as bokeh. Beyond the bokeh, I love the tightly curled proboscis. I've edited this as I believe it's a "Painted lady" not an "American lady" butterfly. There's my ID lack of knowledge.
