Ancient mudpuddles

Rock surface near the Petit Jean Lodge shows its swampy syncline origin in the Pennsylvanian period between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains. The entire mountain is a syncline basin that collects into Cedar Creek. Bailey Lake is the headwater for the waterfall, canyon and into Petit Jean Creek and to the Arkansas River.
