In India, Uttarayan is the day when the sun starts to travel northwards marking the decline of winter. Marking the event, the Kite Festival is celebrated all over Gujarat, and is the most exciting in Ahmedabad. The thread used to fly the kites are called Manjha. Manjha is an abrasive material that usually comprises of fine glass powder ground into a paste with idli, cooked rice or hide glue solution. This is then coated over a thread of sufficient tensile strength to make it (the thread) a cutting tool.
