Jeremiah G Linscott, U.S. Civil War Veteran
This is a verification of Jeremiah's death from disease prepared by the War Department in early 1876, most likely for use in obtaining a child's pension for his sole surviving daughter, Emma Jane. Most deaths of soldiers were caused by disease: chronic diarrhea was perhaps the most prevalent and was caused by the lack of proper sanitation. Jeremiah's unit, the 4th Independent Battery Massachusetts Light Artillery, reportedly lost 51 men during the war; one was killed in battle, the rest died of disease.
His daughter, Annie, and his father, Samuel, died shortly after he did: did they die from the same disease, i.e. from whatever disease it was that he brought home?
