Julia's Braised Beef Brisket with Rice Vermicelli

Julia made 牛"月展" (maybe there's no such character in 普通话 Putonghua?) beef brisket over the weekend, and she wasn't afraid of using spices!

 

She had cinnamon quills, star-anise, cumin and 陈皮 dried mandarin peel, along with garlic and ginger. The spices worked quite well, but we both got the feeling that it was still a bit bland. Perhaps I should have reduced the gravy a bit more?
