Avison Ensemble ‘Grand Concerts’ with soprano Gillian Webster, The Assembly Rooms, Newcastle and St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, London, October 2012

The Avison Ensemble presented ‘Grand Concerts’ with soprano Gillian Webster at the Assembly Rooms, Newcastle (on 3 October 2012) and at St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, London (on 4 October 2012).

Here we are rehearsing at St. John’s Church, Newcastle, where Charles Avison was organist.

The Assembly Rooms was an evocative venue for our Grand Concert of Italian and Italian-inspired English concerti interspersed with some dramatic Handel arias sung by soprano Gillian Webster. From the Roman splendour of Corelli’s concerto we journeyed north to Venice for one of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. And not to ignore Southern Italy the Ensemble performed one of Charles Avison's fascinating Concerti after the keyboard sonatas of the Neapolitan Domenico Scarlatti, before journeying back to England (via Germany!) for one of Handel's Op 6 Concertos. The Ensemble was directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk (baroque violin).

A regular star at the Royal Opera House and a noted exponent of baroque music, Gillian Webster has sung under the baton of Paul McCreesh, Sir Colin Davis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Bernard Haitink, Marc Minkowski, Lord Menuhin, Sir Georg Solti and Jeffrey Tate.

The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
