Doomsday @ Fjallsárlón, Iceland

Sometimes, the best images are the ones we never plan for, they just happen. That day was one of those lucky moments.

Our original plan was simple. Find some ice near the water and show the team an ice beach. We started at Jökulsárlón but were immediately put off by the overwhelming crowds. It felt more like a bustling fish market than the serene landscape we had envisioned. So, we abandoned the idea and headed to Fjallsárlón instead. Unlike Jökulsárlón, Fjallsárlón remains relatively undiscovered. There is little presence on Instagram, no bus tours go there, and the rough, unmaintained road requires a high-clearance 4x4, keeping most tourists away.

The plan was never to stay long. We just wanted to explore for a bit before heading back to Vestahorn for sunset shots. The relentless wind made Fjallsárlón an even less appealing place to linger. After capturing some aerial footage of a nearby bridge, we packed up, ready to leave.

And then, everything changed.

The sky began forming dramatic lenticular clouds, shaped by the glacier’s fierce 100 km/h winds. As the golden light hit, the scene transformed into something extraordinary. Without hesitation, I called the other car and told them to turn around. We had to shoot this. Thankfully, they trusted my instinct and agreed to the last minute change of plans.

It was the right call. The cloud formations were mesmerizing, the golden light painted the ice, and the massive Vatnajökull glacier created the perfect backdrop. A classic Icelandic moment.

The real surprise came a few days later when I returned to the same spot. Every piece of ice was gone. The strong winds had shifted direction, pushing the ice back toward the glacier. In hindsight, that shot wasn’t just lucky, it was a perfect convergence of timing, weather, and instinct.

Some moments can’t be planned. They just happen.
