In November, 2012, vandals snuck onto the grounds of The Grotto and attacked a number of marble statues, including this one of Joseph and Jesus. Jesus' head was located in a dumpster at the nearby Travelodge. Joseph's head, however, has not been recovered. Remarking on the perpetrators, Father Jack Topper of The Grotto stated; "I feel sorry for the people who did this, because they're lacking something in their own life and I hope they find it someday."
