Up to 150 decibels
Getting in close and personal with a Northern Greengrocer or Great Green Cicada, Cuclochila australasiae (virens). It could have made very bad career move by lying on the outside door mat, but when I realised it was only 'playing dead', I relocated it to a safe far away tree.
They are an intriguing large insect that live in the rainforest canopy and just on dusk all tune up in their community orchestra to bombard the forest with their harsh, loud, one-note continuous song. You can almost set the clock by their starting time and it goes on for about 20 minutes.
They are among the loudest insects in the world with the sound reaching up to 150 decibels!
Some other Aussie insects are in my album here www.flickr.com/photos/aussiegypsy/albums/72157632054226006
I really appreciate all who visit to view, comment and/or fave my nature offerings from various parts of Australia. Thank you!
