Hydroponics on the roof (Dakendagen 2022)

Europe, The Nethelands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Daken Dagen 2022, Bijenkorf roof, Innovative agriculture, People (slightly cut)

One of the goals od the Rotterdam Dakendagen (Roof days) is to make people aware of the many new uses flat roofs can have.

One of these uses is shown here – hydroponic agriculture. It’s not soil based. On the bottom of the tubing is a thin layer of growing media like coconut coir, vermiculite or perlite. Via a drip system water and nutrients are pumped in. The principle is to remove as many barriers as possible between a plant’s root system and the water, oxygen, and nutrients it needs.

The main benefit of hydroponic agriculture is the greatly increased growth rate of most plants. It’s not uncommon for a plant to grow at least 20% faster than in soil. And plants will typically yield at least 25% more than their soil-based counterparts.

In the BG are the Lijnbaan flats, Calypso and a hotel whose name shall not be mentioned.

This number 620 of Rotterdam architecture and 6 of the new Rotterdamse Dakendagen 2002 album.
