Ducted prop (Maintenance 6)

Europe. Portugal, Leiria, Nazaré, Harbour, Maintenance wharf, Ship, Ducted propellor (cut from all sides)

Shot again at the maintenance wharf of Nazaré harbour.

Shown here is a ship undergoing a paint job. Prominently displayed is the ducted propellor (aka 'Kort nozzle'). The duct around the prop enhances efficiency and has safety bonuses. The system is only used in highly loaded props and ships that generally don't cruise faster than 18,5 km/h. Kurt nozzles have the additional benefits of reduced bottom suction while operating in shallow water and are less susceptible to jams because of debris or the ship's own net. So they're often used on (coastal) fishing ships and tugs.

This is number 13 of the Nazaré album.
