Hoogkerk sugar rifenery

Europe, Netherlands, Groningen, Hoogkerk, Suiker Unie Vierverlaten, Sugar rifenery

The Suiker Unie is the result of a super-merger of Dutch sugar processing cooperations, a model that followed an a bit earlier one in the milk production sector.

The sugar production (refinery) starts with the beetroot. The factories are for logistical reasons close to the places were the beetroots are grown. During harvest time, locally known as the 'bieten campagne' which generally takes place between September and the first weeks of January, the roads leading to the factory can be clogged by farming tractors and lorries and can get slippery because of the beetroots fell off during transport.

The refinery process is: here .
