Hot Stuff

Molten metal is being dumped from special wagons at the Lihovarská Dump in Ostrava. The shunting locomotive moving the carts is hiding behind the thick layer of steam.

The 66-hectare area is connected to Nová huť ironworks by rails. Each day multiple trains arrive from there to empty blast furnace slag, a by-product of steelmaking.

You can read about the history of the steelmaking industry in Ostrava and how it's connected to the railroads here.
