(1999) "Baby One More Time" Britney Spears Outfit
BOX DATE: 1999
MANUFACTURER: Play Along
RELEASES: 1999 generic; 1999 Live! In Concert
MISSING ITEMS: Skirt, shoes, shirt, cd, microphone, bag
IMPORTANT NOTES: As mentioned above, this outfit was repackaged several different ways. This grey sweater appears to only have been available on the generically packaged dolls. The bra however was sold in the Live! In Concert sets (which included a variety of extras).
PERSONAL FUN FACT: Not surprisingly, this doll was really popular. Considering this was Britney Spears's breakout song in the 90s, I'm not shocked that children flocked to stores to purchase the doll version of this outfit from the infamous music video. Growing up, I had the Yaboom Britney doll who sports a similar ensemble. She came with a lot of spare goodies and could even sing. The Play Along dolls were unable to sing, but oftentimes were packaged with singles, or even better, spare clothes. I found several of these sweaters over the years in various doll lots from the flea market. I have at least three of them, and yet strangely not much else that was sold with this doll. What is pictured here came from a $6 baggie of clothing Colleen and I put together in 2018. That fall we found a massive bin of random dolly odds and ends. Not wanting to buy the entire container due to the filler items (stuffed animals, clone stuff, and random toys), we handpicked the best things. I knew this bra was special so I snagged it. When I found another grey sweater, this confirmed my suspicions that it was probably for Britney Spears. Both items are very well made. I like that the bra has snaps instead of velcro. The sweater is unusually soft, and this particular one is in better condition than my others. It does have a tendency to sit weirdly on my dolls because the lining wants to flip over. But other than that, I adore this very much, and it would be great for one of my Happy Family Grandma dolls...obviously not paired with the risky bra!
