PERSONAL FUN FACT: This Britney is one of my greatest treasures from childhood. I'm so grateful I still have her, despite the several doll purges I did in my younger years. Although you'll note she no longer has her signature red faux leather jumpsuit. That was something I tossed out or donated as a teenager...I'm not sure why. She is so very cherished because my mom surprised me with this Britney doll for Christmas. I want to say it was for Christmas 2001, because the year before I got a radio and two Britney Spears CDs. By the time I received this lady, her "Oops! I Did it Again" single didn't have a use (since I had the full length album). Anyways, Mom HATED Britney Spears with a passion. She thought her songs were stupid and that Britney was a revealing dresser. However, she was very supportive of my interests, even if they didn't align with her own taste. Mom had noted how much I loved playing with my first Yaboom Britney Spears doll (I actually just liked making her sing so my other dolls could lip sync to it). That's why she chose two CDs to go with my new radio for Christmas 2000. Then she constantly heard me and my sister listening to the Britney albums...specifically "Oops...I Did it Again!" Colleen had also gotten CDs for Christmas, but it was always that one Britney album we were playing. Mom loved music too, so I think although our artist choice was different, she wanted to be supportive. I believe that's probably why she picked out this Britney doll for me the next holiday season. It didn't occur to me until now, but she must have constantly heard the lyrics to "Oops...I Did it Again!," and thought I'd want the corresponding doll. I remember opening her up on Christmas with delight. I didn't get that many other dolls that year, if I'm not mistaken. She was also my last Christmas gift from Mom, who passed away during the summer of 2002. One of the things I've always missed the most about Mom are those small moments. Like when she heard Colleen and me listening to "Lucky" and said it was a pretty song. She asked who it was, and when she heard the name Britney Spears, her nose wrinkled up in disgust as she stood on the stairs, holding a laundry basket. I'll never forget that moment, despite how eroded many of my memories of her are. For that reason, this Britney will always mean the world to me. It really has nothing to do with the fact that she is Britney Spears, but everything to do with my mom.
