LDN 1622

Lynds' Catalogue of Dark Nebulae (abbreviation: LDN) is an astronomical catalogue of dark nebulae. It was compiled by American astronomer Beverly Turner Lynds in 1962.

Pictured here is the 1622nd entry in that catalog. This is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion, visible during the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere. The dense concentration of dust obscures light that is emitted behind it. The red-pink areas are emission regions containing hydrogen gas that emits red light when energized by very hot nearby stars.

Here is the twist though. The dark portion of the nebula has an appearance of an ominous shadowy figure which has been named the “Boogeyman Nebula” at some point in time by observers and perhaps astrophotographers. This is the name that is most frequently used when referencing this object!

Alright, you want say it’s the Boogeyman, go ahead. I personally think it looks a lot like one of the Transformer characters from that contemporary movie series.

LDN 1622 is “very close” to Earth, only 500 light years and measures about 10 light years across.
