The Kyiv Metro is really impressive. The stations might not be on quite the grandiloquent scale of the Moscow Metro stations, but all the ones I visited on my trip to Kyiv last year were beautiful.. As underground train systems go it’s not that big with 3 lines and 52 stations, but it is very busy and seems to serve the city very well. Construction began in 1949 and the first 5 stations opened to the public in 1960.
As you’d expect from period of construction the stations have decorative arts to delight any fan of mid-century design. Every station that I saw had beautifully designed decorative arts and every one was different.
And the Kyiv Metro has one particular claim to fame: it has the world’s deepest metro train station: Arsenalna. This was the station nearest to the Hotel I stayed in during my time in Kyiv, so it was one I got to know quite well! The extremely long flight of escalators is extremely impressive and the trip down to the platforms takes around 5 minutes.
I would have liked to have had a bit more time to explore a more of the stations, and next time I visit Kyiv I will set aside some time to do just that!
