Interruptions: A series of pop performances on the Montrose Medians

by Art League Houston

Interruptions is a series of guerrilla-Esq series of pop up performances on the Montrose medians between Westheimer rd. and West Grey rd. during rush hour traffic.

According to the City of Houston, 44,000 cars pass by Art league on a daily basis and due to traffic volumes, the road transforms into a temporary parking lot between the hours of 4:30 PM– 5:00 PM.

This series functions as a way of creatively ‘interrupting’ the average Houstonians banal car commute to work or home.

According to an annual study from Texas A&M transportation institute researchers, the average Houstonian wastes more than two days a year on average in traffic congestion.

“After living in Houston for eight years and driving a car every day, I am able to predict almost everything that I will experience on an average day” says Jennie Ash. “The car is an extension of one’s home, and enables us to be in control of where we go and what we experience. Experiencing the city through a car window isolates people from each other and also provides a numb experience of travelling through Houston’s diverse neighborhoods”.

The first installment of the series will begin April 8 at 5:00 PM on the median of Montrose Blvd and Peden St. by experimental Opera singer and artist Lisa E. Harris. The performance is a mini opera that consists of five 15 minutes performances, which will take place daily between 5:00 PM – 5:15 PM from Monday, April 8 – Friday, April 15, 2013.

Drivers will be able to view the opera whilE they are stopped at the red light on the corner of West Grey and Montrose Blvd. Signs will be posted on the medians leading up to the performance to tell drivers to “roll down their windows” and “Performance ahead”.

This week was specifically chosen because it’s typically one of the most stressful weeks of the year since taxes are due so this performance aims to be a positive experiences in one’s commute.

Other pop up events will include music performances, karaoke, car radio interference's, hula hooping, amongst others that literally reconnect the Houston driver to the outside world through creative engagement.
