A Yukon Dog Team

Followers of mine may recognize this photo. This is actually a re-post after I accidentally made a wrong choice on LightroomCC and wound up deleting it from Flickr. #*@~?+^!

 

This photo was most likely purchased by Bill for his album of photos along the Alaska Highway. He was a civilian worker on the ALCAN Highway in British Columbia and Yukon in 1943.

 

The dogs you see here would have been bred not for speed, but for the strength and endurance necessary to pull heavy sleds loaded with freight. 21st century sled dogs in Alaska and Canada are smaller because they are selected more for their racing speed.
