The church of São Pedro de Vera Cruz, better known as the church of Santo Lenho, since what is believed to be a fragment of Lignum Crucis has been kept there for centuries, it is the most important monument in the Municipality of Portel. Its importance comes not from just possessing the fragment that was present in the Battle of Salado, in 1340, but also of its architectural and historical background.
The foundation of the Monastery of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem ( Knights Hospitaller) or the Marmelar Hospital, from which the architectural complex formed by the church, consecrated
to São Pedro and parish of the village of Vera Cruz, and ruins of the Paço dos Comendadores.
