WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – Jeff Swallow, with the Norfolk District’s geospatial section, receives a tour of the Great Lakes Dredging and Dock Company’s dredge, Liberty Island, from Howard Hawrey, the ship’s captain. The dredge is one of three vessels working to collect beach quality sand in the Atlantic Ocean and depositing it along the shore of NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility, May 7, 2012. The new beach will help protect more than $1 billion in federal government and Commonwealth of Virginia assets located here. The Wallops Island facility is home to, not only NASA, but also the US Navy Surface Combat Systems Center and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport making this a growing economic generator for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the region.
