The Maison Blanche Building was constructed in 1908 to house the department store on the lower levels and offices above. The Maison Blanche Department Store was founded in 1897. The Canal Street flagship was open until 1979 when the company went through bankruptcy. It was eventually reopened in 1984. Mercantile Stores purchased the chain in 1992 and then Mercantile was acquired by Dillards in 1998. Dillards promptly closed the downtown store (as they did with most chains they acquired). The building was adaptively reused as a Ritz-Carlton Hotel and reopened in 2000.
Technically found in the French Quarter (Vieux Carre Historic District ) which is on the National Register #66000377 and a National Historic Landmark.
