Chart of Tauranga Harbour

On 11 May the HMS Herald arrived at Tauranga with Thomas Bunbury, Edward Williams, and the Herald Sheet of te Tiriti o Waitangi. After a rough passage, they went ashore and met missionary James Stack.

William Hobson had thought little progress had been made in Tauranga, but on arrival Bunbury was surprised to find that many rangatira had already signed the Tauranga sheet (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195654324). Hori Kingi Tupaea and several other Otumoetai rangatira had not signed however, so Bunbury visited their pā that evening. Rangatira there wanted to consult with their hapū, so Bunbury arranged a meeting at the CMS Mission Station, Te Papa, for 12 May (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/16378133837).

This is a harbour chart of Tauranga Harbour, published by the British Admiralty. It shows the location of Otumoetai, as well as Te Papa Mission Station and other local features.
