Thick-billed Euphonia

The Thick-billed Euphonia (Euphonia laniirostris) was photographed at Finca Ecoturística San Javier in Chucuní, Tolima, Colombia, at an elevation of 726 meters. This vibrant bird, known for its bright yellow chest and deep blue head, is a stunning subject against the lush green backdrop of the reserve. The photograph captures the detailed patterns on its feathers and its alert posture, showcasing the beauty of this species found typically in humid forests, forest edges, and plantations ranging from southern Mexico through Central America to parts of Colombia and Ecuador.

From a photography perspective, capturing the Thick-billed Euphonia was a rewarding experience. The soft, diffused light filtering through the canopy created a serene atmosphere, enhancing the vibrant colors of the bird. I used a 1/250 shutter speed to ensure sharpness while maintaining a natural look. The tranquil setting of Finca Ecoturística San Javier, managed by a dedicated trio of conservation-minded women, provided an ideal environment for this shoot. Their commitment to preserving the local ecosystem is evident, making it a perfect spot for birdwatching and photography.
