Season5: Eps20 - Sin in the City 7 (photo story)
Candy (shakily): “I…I don’t see why Dane thinks he’s responsible for this tragedy. He didn’t push her off that cliff. He didn’t drown her.”
Charley (matter-of-factly): “He was late to their meeting. If he hadn’t have been, he could’ve stopped it from happening. Protected Alice.”
Candy (outraged): “That still doesn’t mean any of it is his fault! That’s illogical!”
Charley: “Yeah, right, because love, betrayal, and death really bring out the rational in a person. Dane’s got a white knight complex and a deep-seated need to protect what’s his. Alice was his. She died, ergo, his fault.”
Candy: *rubs her face hard* “Did he try to press charges against his brother? Have him investigated?”
Charley: “He tried, but it didn’t do much good. No one believed him, not even his own parents. They said his accusations were a product of his grief, and he needed to shut up before he brought even more scandal down on the family. They blocked everything Dane tried to do in pursuit of the truth, even lying to the authorities to discredit him when necessary. It was their word against his. He lost.”
Candy: *features twist in revulsion* “Wow, that’s a whole new level of messed up. I cannot believe people like that share my air. It makes me want to throw up!”
Charley: “Hamish is supposed to inherit his family’s title, so I gather that means he’s reputation was to be defended at all costs. Dane was raised believing he was only there to be the spare, nothing more, so I guess it’s no surprise he didn’t get any support from his parents whatsoever.”
Candy: “So, he left.”
Charley: *nods* “Yeah. He said he couldn’t stay there anymore. He couldn’t look at his parents, at Hamish, without going senseless with rage. He was afraid that he’d kill one of them. Was afraid he wanted to kill one of them. So, he left.”
Candy: “How long ago did this all happen? How long as Alice been…gone.”
Charley: “A little over two years. Dane did everything he could to disappear, so he couldn’t be found by anyone from his old life. He’d wandered aimlessly for nearly a year and a half when he stumbled into the London pub where Danny and Caid were drinking. He overheard them say that the band was short a drummer, so he offered to sit in with them. Dane’s always been musically gifted, so he took loads of lessons growing up—drums, piano, guitar, trumpet—and the rest is history.”
Candy: “It’s all so mind-bogglingly gruesome, like something out of an Agatha Christie novel, except if Dane’s right, Alice didn’t get justice. That little baby didn’t get justice. It’s not right. *slaps her palm on the table, tearfully* It’s not right!”
Charley: *reaches across the table, pats Candy’s hand* “I know. I know it’s not, Can.”
Danny: *walks up behind Candy, placing a hand on her shoulder* “What’s not right? Hey, Sprout, you okay?”
