Kumi: *makes grabby fingers, eyes filled with desire* “Gimme!”

 

Yuri (dryly): “Suddenly, I feel as if I know what Simon experiences during your nightly sex romps.”

 

Kumi: “Night, morning, mid-afternoon, our libidos know not time of day, only insatiable need…insatiable need similar to what I feel right now for that spoon, so gimme!”

 

Yuri: “You may only lick the spoon after I finish mixing the batter properly. While you wait, could you please go into the butler’s pantry and procure more cake flour. I am running low out here.”

 

Kumi: “Nu-uh.”

 

Yuri: *pauses mixing to level a cool gaze at her twin* “Why ever not?”

 

Kumi: “Because every time you send me in there, I can’t find what you want. Then, I yell that I can’t find it. Then, you yell it’s on the second shelf in the back or whatever. Then, I yell I still can’t find it. And, finally, you stomp in, find it yourself in two seconds, and stomp out again. So—and I say this with all the love in my heart—nu-uh, get it your own damn self.”

 

Yuri: “Really, Kumi, it is all clearly labeled, and considering the multitude of books and magazines you read, I know you are not illiterate.”

 

Kumi: “I’m selectively illiterate. You can blame the public school system for making me read all those books I didn’t want to during the summers. Now, I read only what interests me. An article on the socioeconomic impact of fair-trade in third-world countries: yes. Dry goods labels: no.”

 

Yuri: “Well, consuming the cakes, cookies, and pastries made with the aforementioned dry goods certainly seems to interest you…and if you want to see any more of those today, you will transport your pert derriere off to the pantry and bring me more cake flour. *unnerving stare* Now.”

 

Kumi: “Sheesh, fine!” *gets up, plods off*

 

Yuri: *gives the bowl one last stir and begins pouring the batter into the cupcake pans*

 

Kumi: *yells* “Where is it?”

 

Yuri: “It is eye-level at the forefront of the shelf. You cannot miss it.”

 

**Several moments tick by**

 

Kumi: *yells* “I still don’t see it!”

 

Yuri: *voice taking on a dangerous edge* “Kumi Margaret, do you really not see it, or are you trying to make a point, because if it is the latter, I am going to murder you. I often fanaticize about being an only child!”

 

Kumi: *yells* “Yuri Victoria, if you murder me, I’m telling Daddy…and I don’t see it!”

 

Yuri: “Oh, never mind! I shall fetch it myself! Come back in here and watch the oven. The timer is about to go off, and I want the cakes removed the moment it dings and not a second later.” *sets bowl down, walks around the island*

 

Kumi: *walks back in, shrugs dramatically* “I’m not going to say I told you so because you might actually murder me, and I’m suddenly uncomfortable with all the handy weapons in the vicinity. But I swear, Ri-Ri, I didn’t see it.”
