Charley: *props her elbow on the counter, leaning her head against her palm* “Sounds good. I was looking at a microwave dinner, otherwise. And thanks for sharing that about your mom with me.”
Yuri: “You are welcome. As for the favor you wish to ask of me, did you hope your gift of mint would soften me up?”
Charley: “Something like that. What I need to ask is kind of a whopper, and I know you’re always really busy as it is, so…*shrugs* I figured a bribe, albeit a modest one, could only help my case.”
Yuri: “Bend my ear, then, and we shall see.”
Charley: “The school where I teach is a pretty special place. Classes are small and interactive, and we offer specialized courses that you don’t normally find outside of college. We have particularly good fine arts and science curriculums.”
Yuri: “From Lizzy’s and Hermione’s chattering, I have gleaned as much. Georgie is especially thrilled that Lizzy was able to gain admittance, since she is a gifted artist and the school cultivates that gift in a manner more traditional schools would not.”
Charley: “Yeah, the only drawback, in my opinion, is our school is tuition-based, and the tuition is not cheap. Most students are from families that can afford it, but roughly one-third of the students are there on scholarship.”
Yuri: *noise of agreement* “Georgie has mentioned she would not be able to afford the tuition, if not for the school’s scholarship program. It is something for which she is profoundly grateful.”
Charley: *nods* “Education is the only way out for some of these kids. Without it, their futures are bleak, and I know what that’s like firsthand. I lived that reality. *emphasizes words by striking the counter with her fist* As long as a kid shows promise and initiative, he or she should be afforded equal access to resources that nurture their talents. I’m not naïve. I know that’s not going to happen for every kid, but I’ve made it my mission to make it happen for as many kids as possible.”
Yuri: *replaces the lid on the pot, lowers the heat, and gives Charley her full attention* “I could not agree more. Tell me what I can do to help.”
Charley: “The money for the scholarship students come from several different places—the federal and state governments, private benefactors, school-held fundraisers, etc. I am in charge of one of the fundraisers this year. The one no one ever wants, since it’s our lowest earning moneymaker, not to mention a lot of work: the bake sale.”
Yuri: *cocks her head to the side, smug smile spreading across her face* “A bake sale. You need my help with a bake sale?”
Charley: “Yes.”
Yuri: *purrs* “Oh, you clever girl. You have come to the right person, and that is a fact. *holds up a hand, silencing Charley’s response* However, you need to understand something from the beginning. If you court my help in this matter, I will run roughshod over you or anyone else who impedes our goal of accruing as much money as possible. I am unswerving, uncompromising, and unrelenting when I set my mind to a task’s success. Do you understand me, and if so, do you accept my terms?”
Charley: *holds out her hand* “Absolutely. Piss off as many people as you want. It’s for the kids. Just, um, y’know, don’t get me fired…please.”
