Diego: “Actually, maybe the only time it should make sense is at two in the morning.” *finishes off his toast in one huge bite*
Charley: “I heard what you said to him this afternoon, and it’s been hard for me to accept. I know you told me that you had feelings for me, but I didn’t realize how…*voice tapers off*
Diego: “Intense they were.”
Charley: *picks at the crust on her toast* “I guess I should’ve. You’re an intense guy. But what I don’t understand is how you can love me so much…and hate me, too. And I mean really hate me. Are…are you ever going to forgive me?”
Diego: *mood abruptly sours, eyes glitter with suppressed rage, tightly* “I don’t know how, Charley. I don’t know how I’m *voice dips low into a growl* ever supposed to forgive you for that night.”
Charley: *looks up to meet Diego’s gaze squarely* “I’m sorry, Diego. I’m so sorry. It never occurred to me that someone would…have to find me afterwards. I wasn’t thinking about anyone or anything but myself and escaping by the only means I thought was left to me.”
Diego: *fist clenches* “What if it’d been Molly? Do you know what it’d have done to her? You came onto the scene after she’d finally begun healing from the hell she went through. You don’t know what she was like when I first found her: skin and bones, dead-eyed, dried blood still in her ears from the explosion that blasted out her eardrums. It took years for her to revert back to her annoyingly cheeky self. And you would’ve destroyed it all just because you decided to take the coward’s way out!” *gets up abruptly, chair making an obscenely loud scraping sound, as he turns his back on Charley, and attempts to rein in his temper*
Charley: *voice soft, but steady* “And what if Diego found me? A boy who suffered unimaginable brutality from a father who should’ve loved him, and a mother whose weakness let it all happen. Seeing me like that, covered in blood and lifeless, brought it all back for you. The day you came home from school and found your mother dead on the floor by your own father’s hand. You loved her…but you hated her, too, for refusing to leave. For letting him hurt her over and over again. For letting him hurt you.”
Diego: *back still turned, scathingly* “If that’s your way of accusing me of having an Oedipus complex, then you can shove it up your ass. What? You took one psychology course in college and that qualifies you to analyze me. I don’t love you because you remind me of my effing mother. I don’t know why I love you. I just do. You’re not the only one who has problems putting their feelings into words.”
Charley (dryly): “Yeah, but whereas I just don’t say anything, you say all the wrong things.”
Diego: *breathes in deeply and exhales slowly, turns back around, and resumes his seat* “But most of the time you can take it. And the times you can’t, I know you’ll forgive me. There. That’s one of the reasons why I love you right there.”
Charley: “Do you think you’ll ever forgive me, or will it always be in the back of your mind, festering?”
Diego: “I know you were messed up, Bug. Logically, I get why you did it, but it’s not logic that makes me feel like I’m suffocating every time I think about it. It’s not logic that has me dreaming about it and waking up in a cold sweat. Can I forgive you for cursing me with a memory that haunts me every damn day of my life? That makes me feel helpless like I used to when I was a kid? *shakes head* I don’t know.”
Charley: *presses a hand to her chest, face deeply grieved* “Is there anything I can do to make amends? I may not deserve your forgiveness, but I’m asking for it all the same.”
Diego: “Promise me that you’ll never try to kill yourself again.”
