Dane: *harsh laugh* “Oh, please! Like anything’s ever been easy with you, Charley! And don’t think for a minute that you’re not worth the extra trouble, but sometimes when we’re together it’s like I’m holding my breath—afraid to talk about anything of substance. Afraid I’ll end up poking a sore spot. Make you sad. Make you remember something you’d rather not. It’s more wearisome than I can say. And I’m not going to apologize for being upset that you tried to end your life and not knowing how to deal with it. I’m not perfect, alright!”
Charley (outraged): “I never asked you to be!”
Dane: “You never had to ask! I know it’s what you want. I know you’ve got me up on some pedestal, thinking I’m some selfless, sensitive bloke, and I’ll admit I am that way with you more than anyone else, because you bring it out in me. But I’m not like that all the time. No one can be that way all the time! It’s too much bloody pressure. I don’t want to disappoint you, Charley, but it’s going to happen.”
Charley: *rolls eyes* “Riiiiiight, anything else you want to say, while you’re shimmying down that ‘pedestal’ I’ve stuck you up on—because clearly this is all my fault, right? My fault for thinking the world of you. My fault for trusting you. My fault for loving you.”
Dane (disgustedly): “Oh, yes, do play the martyr. That’s going to help the situation enormously. And, as a matter of fact, since you asked, I hate your current living situation. I hate you sharing a flat with him, when he’s made no secret that he’s out to seduce you into his bleedin’ bed. But I didn’t ask you to kick him out because I knew you wouldn’t. You’re asking a hell of a lot out of me here, Charley. But, then, you always do, don’t you?”
Charley: *pushes glasses up, frustrated* “Look, I know it’s unfair to you. I know! And, if it was the other way around, I’d feel just as pissed off about it, but I can’t kick him out. Furthermore, I won’t.”
Dane: *unhappy nod* “I came over here today because I was worried about you. And I didn’t know what to say to you. All I could think of was saying something wrong, hurting you, and making you…”
Charley: *crosses arms, exasperated* “Suicidal again? Well, I was worried that’s what was going to happen. Guess I had good reason, huh. You didn’t even try to talk it out with me first. And considering how much you dislike Diego, the fact you’d rather go to him than me is extremely offensive, Dane!”
Dane (coldly): “Like I said before, I won’t apologize. I did what I thought was right by coming here. You may not like my decision, but I’d like to remind you there are two people in this relationship, and you’re not the only one who has opinions, problems, and anxieties. But I suppose mine will always take a back seat, since there’s no way in hell I can outdo a homeless, suicidal teen waif, is there?”
Charley: *inhales sharply, face twisting in anguish, before going blank* “I’m sorry you feel that way. I think you need to go.”
Dane (mockingly): “Wait, aren’t you forgetting something? Don’t you want to ask me if I want to break up, like usual?”
Charley (calmly): “No. Because I don’t want to break up, and as you’ve so clearly expressed, this relationship is all about me and my needs. I do, however, want you to leave because I don’t want to look at your face right now.”
Dane (bitterly): “Fine by me. I’ve bloody well had enough!” *storms out, slamming the door so hard it bounces back open and hits the wall*
